Sophie Turner Talks ‘Dark Phoenix’ at NYCC 2018

Dark Phoenix actress Sophie Turner attended a special panel at New York Comic Con 2018 where she talked about her time on Game of Thrones and her upcoming X-Men movie.

Reporters in attendance asked her about sharing scenes with Michael Fassbender, her on-screen relationship with Scott Summers and everything in between. Here are the highlights from the Entertainment Weekly in the Studio @NYCC spotlight panel.

Did Famke Janssen reach out to you?

I emailed her when I got the role and said ‘I loved your work so much and you played Jean in such a heartbreaking and beautiful way and I wanted to emulate that and put my own spin on it. Is there any advice you can give, anything I should read or watch that you did?’ And she wrote back and said ‘I’m handing the baton to you, do with the role what you want this is a new thing for you.’ That was a big honor.

And then I met her at a party and ran up to her, hugged her and said “FAMKE!” She’s really sweet and supportive.

Did you do your research?

I probably watched the movies like 100 times. I was gifted one of the original Dark Phoenix comics from a friend so I read that. I did my research, but, one thing Simon wanted to really emphasize, especially with Dark Phoenix and all the other material in terms of the movies, this is a whole new kind of movie. Don’t rewatch the movies, this is a completely different take on Dark Phoenix because of the mood. A completely different take on an X-Men movie.

Did you know the next film would be Dark Phoenix when filming Apocalypse?

She “Phoenixed” out a bit in Apocalypse , but it was my first movie and I didn’t think the next one would be about Dark Phoenix. [I thought] maybe way down the line they’ll do it. It was only about six months before we started shooting Dark Phoenix that Simon sat me down and told me.

Sophie Turner’s Drama ‘Josie’ to Launch Mammoth Film Festival

Sophie Turner’s independent drama “Josie” has been selected as the opening night film for the inaugural Mammoth Film Festival on Feb. 8, Variety has learned exclusively.

The film, formerly titled “Huntsville,” also stars Dylan McDermott and Jack Kilmer. It’s directed by Eric England from a screenplay by Anthony Ragnone II. The script, which made the 2014 Black List, centers on a solitary man living a dull existence in the sleepy town. He raises eyebrows when he develops a questionable relationship with a recently transplanted high school student.

Turner is best known for her role as Sansa Stark in “Game of Thrones.” She portrayed Jean Grey in “X-Men: Apocalypse.”

The festival, which is being billed as a mini-Sundance, runs from Feb. 8 to Feb. 11 and will feature other indie world premieres, studio films, shorts, and episodics.

“It’s a real honor to have such a prestigious title as ‘Josie’ open our first ever Mammoth Film Festival,” said founder Tanner Beard. “Despite this being our inaugural event, we’re incredibly proud that our festival will be able to compete on a global scale with our world premieres and attractive titles that distributors are sure to be excited about.”

Beard is an executive producer of Terrence Malick’s “Song to Song,” “Voyage of Time,” and “Knight of Cups.” The board members include Jay Cohen from Gersh and Ryan Black from Grindstone/Lionsgate. Beard, Tomik Mansoori, Theo Dumont, and Daniel Sol founded the festival.

“Josie” is produced by Luisa Iskin, Johnny Wunder, Jeff Kalligheri, and Kevin Matusow. The exec producers are Carissa Buffel, Steven Chester Prince, Fouad Mikati, Candice Abela, Karam Abulhusn, Stephen Bowen, Ash Sarohia, and Lauren Russell. The film was produced by the Coalition Group in association with the Traveling Picture Show Company, Waterstone Entertainment, and Boo Pictures. [Source]

Sophie Turner To Star In, Produce With Lotus ‘Girl Who Fell From The Sky’

Lotus Entertainment and Stan & Deliver Films have set Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner for Girl Who Fell From the Sky. Turner will star in the film and produce it, and the intention is for it to be her next feature vehicle. Stan Brooks (Perfect Sisters) will direct the film, and has adapted the script from the book by Juliane Koepcke & Beate Rygiert. The film package will be sold at AFM.

Turner will play Koepcke, a high school senior and the sole survivor of the December 24, 1971 crash of LANSA Flight 508 in the Peruvian rain forest. The 17-year-old was on a Christmas Eve flight with her mother, to join her father for Christmas, when the Lockheed L-188A Electra en route from Lima to Pucallpa flew directly into a thunderstorm and was struck by lightning. The plane was incinerated; Koepcke was ejected, still belted to her seat. She fell 10,000 feet — almost two miles through the air, before the canopy of the Amazon rain forest broke her fall and miraculously saved her life. From there, the teenager struggled to survive an 11-day ordeal, navigating through the treacherous jungles to be rescued.

Like Gravity did with Sandra Bullock, most of this movie focuses solely on Turner, who has come of age as an actress on Game of Thrones and who reprises the role of Jean Grey in the upcoming Simon Kinberg-directed X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

Brooks will produce with Turner and Lotus Entertainment’s co-chairmen Jim Seibel and Bill Johnson — latter two exec produced the survival tale The Grey — and Steve Glick. Laray Mayfield will also produce and serve as casting director. Stan & Deliver’s Gia Ghadimian is co-producer.

Turner is repped by CAA, Independent Talent Group and Bloom, Hergott. The deal was brokered by Steve Glick of Glick Management and Hilary Goldstein of Buchli Goldstein. [Source]

‘Game of Thrones’ Star Sophie Turner Joins Indie Drama ‘Huntsville’

Dylan McDermott also will star in the Eric England-helmed film, which is based on a 2014 Black List script by Anthony Ragnone.

Sophie Turner is going from would-be queen to troubled teen.

The Game of Thrones actress has signed on to star in the indie drama Huntsville.

Based on a 2014 Black List script by Anthony Ragnone, the Eric England-helmed film will also star Dylan McDermott (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) and Jack Kilmer (The Nice Guys).

The story centers on Hank (McDermott), a solitary man living a dull existence in a sleepy Florida town who raises eyebrows when he develops a questionable relationship with Josie (Turner), a recently transplanted high school student.

Production is scheduled to begin this month in and around Los Angeles.

The project first came together at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival via Luisa Iskin’s Coalition Group. At the time, it was being shopped with Boardwalk Empire‘s Shea Whigham and The Witch‘s Anya Taylor-Joy in the lead roles, but the pair subsequently fell out. Iskin brought in Kim Leadford from StarStream Media to put financing together.

Waterstone Entertainment’s Jeff Kalligheri and Stephen Bowen are producing alongside Traveling Picture Show Co.’s Kevin Matusow. Carissa Buffel and Steven Chester Prince also are on board as producers.

Iskin and Leadford are producing alongside Ash Sarohia and John Wunder.

Turner is best known for her turn as Sansa Stark, the would-be queen of the North on HBO’s Game of Thrones. Like many of the stars of the hit series, she has been busy fielding offers on the film front. She most recently appeared in X-Men: Apocalypse as Jean Grey.

Turner is repped by CAA, Independent Talent Group and attorney David Feldman.

McDermott, star of the long-running TV series The Practice, is handled by CAA and Hansen Jacobson.

Kilmer, the son of Val Kilmer and actress Joanna Whalley, became a young actor to watch when he starred alongside Emma Roberts and Nat Wolff in Gia Coppola’s Palo Alto, based on the James Franco novel. He is repped by CAA, Principato-Young and Hirsch Wallerstein.

Gersh, which reps Ragnone and England, is repping domestic rights for Huntsville with CAA.

England is additionally managed by Manus Entertainment and Ragnone by Elevate Entertainment. [Source]

Sophie Turner reveals ‘exciting’ plot details about X-Men: Apocalypse

Actress Sophie Turner thinks the storyline for X-Men: Apocalypse is “the darkest” by far in comparison to other recent franchise instalments.

The 19-year-old star portrays a young version of telekinetic and telepathic mutant Jean Grey in the forthcoming picture, and she anticipates audiences will be blown away by the twists and turns screenwriter Simon Kinberg penned into the script.

“It’s the darkest X-Men so far, definitely,” she tells Entertainment Tonight of what fans can expect to see in Apocalypse. “There’s a little bit of a love story in it. It’s very exciting.”

Although specific plot details for the film, which is the ninth instalment in the X-Men series, remain tightly under wraps, big picture elements of the narrative have been released to the public. According to IMDb, the upcoming feature centres on the efforts of Professor Charles Xavier and his team to prevent Apocalypse, the first, immortal and most powerful mutant of all, from exterminating the entire human race.

X-Men: Apocalypse director Bryan Singer, who took charge of X-Men, X-Men 2 and 2014’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, previously claimed no character is safe from death in the new movie.

“I’ll kill any of those characters any day I want,” Singer told reporters during an Apocalypse set visit last summer (15), according to The Hollywood Reporter. “They’re all fair game. Anything can happen.”

The film has an impressive cast, with James McAvoy playing Professor Xavier, Oscar Isaac as Apocalypse, Evan Peters as Quicksilver, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Jennifer Lawrence as Raven/Mystique and Olivia Munn as Psylocke. X-Men: Apocalypse reaches U.S. theatres on 27 May (16). [Source]

What to expect from X-Men Apocalypse

Movies franchises, specially about superheroes, are not uncommon those days. X-Men is one of the most popular ones and, since Days of Future Past was realeased, X-Men fans are crazy to see what comes next.

Knowing that, 20th Century Fox is working on the next movie, X-Men: Apocalypse since back DoFP had even premiered. The movie will bring back Bryan Singer, the director who helped to launch the first X-Men movies and came back for for X-Men: Days of Future Past.

About the big villain of the movie, we also got a sneak peek from the end-credit scene of the last film: for the first time, we saw Apocalypse using his powers to control the Great Pyramid, in Egypt, where people thought he was a God (so we also find out he has been around for a very long time). From the comics, we know his given name is En Sabah Nur, which translates to “The First One” – so Apocalypse can very well be the first mutante toe ver exist! Reportedly, his agenda in this movie is to creat a new world where he can be the ruler. Oscar Isaac is set to play the big villain this time.
Jean Grey is back

The movie will take place in the First Class franchise, since most of the First Class cast is set to make an appearance in Apocalypse. Other names in the cast are Jennifer Lawrence, reprising her role as Mystique, Evan Peter as Quicksilver and Lucas Till as Havok. Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner will play Jean Grey.

Accoding to The Movie Plot website, “what will be happening before Apocalypse arrives is Professor X following through with his promise from Days of Future Past to Wolverine to seek out the X-Men. In fact, the three main people Wolverine told Professor X to find are in the movie; Cyclopes (Tye Sheridan) , Storm (Alexandra Shipp) and Jean Gray (Sophie Turner)”.

X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse will bring the team led by Professor Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) against Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac), the first and most powerful mutant. The cast returning Hugh Jackman, Jennifer Lawrence and the great cast last long.

Apocalypse’s official first trailer will be released later this month attached to Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The movie is set to premiere on May 27, 2016. [Source]
