We last saw Sophie Turner on the small screen as Sansa Stark in Game of Thrones, gloriously wearing her crown after her coronation as Queen of the North. Since then, Turner has made a leap to the big screen, playing Jean Grey in X-Men: Dark Phoenix. And it’s been a huge year in her personal life, as she married Joe Jonas in a surprise Las Vegas ceremony (wearing the coolest bridal jumpsuit). Oh, and the moment she met Queer Eye’s Jonathan Van Ness at the VMAs was one of the most iconic videos of 2019.

It has now been announced that Turner is set to return to our screens in a new series called Survivor.

Survive, which is a novel adaptation, is a romantic thriller which follows two people who are the only survivors of a plane crash in the mountains. Jane (Turner) is a suicidal woman who has just been released from a mental health facility. However, on her way home from the facility, the plane crashes and she finds herself stranded with a stranger called Paul (Corey Hawkins). The show will explore the personal stories of their characters as they try to navigate their way back to civilisation.

Survive will be a ten-part series and will drop on new streaming service, Quibi. This new streaming service will launch in 2020 and is only going to be available on smartphones, which will change the way we consume new “bite size” entertainment.

Speaking about the new role, Turner said: “I couldn’t be more honoured to portray the role of Jane in Survive for Quibi.

“She’s a complex character fighting against the odds to not only save her life, but to also find her own source of strength and courage. I only hope this can impact anyone struggling with self-worth to understand they are braver than they know and to seek the support they need.”

If you invented time travel, how would you use it? The answer that Time Freak, the new sci-fi rom-com starring Asa Butterfield and Sophie Turner, locks onto is to try and fix a great relationship gone wrong. Butterfield plays Stillman, a physics genius, who’s broken up with by Turner’s Debbie and vows to fix what he feels is true love. This involves painfully reliving some of his most embarrassing moments, changing both himself and Debbie in the process.

Screen Rant caught up with Turner and Butterfield to chat making Time Freak and its biggest challenges.

Normally, movies shoot of order. But in this one, you’re shooting out of order of the logic of the characters as well. Did that pose any unique challenges?

Asa Butterfield: Yeah. We were shooting out of order, but then we’d have to shoot multiple timelines of the same event at the same time. So doing the scene, but then you’d do it again with… yeah, it got very confusing, simply put. We had to have it very planned out, but it works. It works.

The movie is morally quite tricky – you’ve got meddling with people’s emotions. I don’t think the movie shies away from that – it can’t to get to the conclusion. How did you feel, reading the script, and how did you ensure that the movie came across quite earnestly?

Sophie Turner: It could have been a melodramatic piece, and it could have been a bit over-the-top, but it wasn’t because of the very kind of minute things that Stillman was going back to try and fix, rather than these big events in their lives that could be blown open. Very real. And the script, it was all the writing really. I mean, the characters were there, the arcs was there. It wasn’t too farfetched. Because when you’re shooting a movie that has this supernatural, fantastic thing to it such a time traveling, you have to ensure the stories feel very grounded and very real so that the characters… there’s that balance so that we don’t go too far over the top.

You talk about this type of movie. There’s a long line of romantic time travel – About Time, The Time Traveller’s Wife, Groundhog Day. Did you guys go back to any of these?

AB: I wouldn’t say in terms of for the performance. I’m sure artistically they would have used references from them in the filmmaking process, and certainly, the comedic elements were there. There’s a lot you can do with time travel – in who’s aware of the mechanics of time travel. There are a lot of gags with me and Skyler [Gisondo in that]. But in terms of performance, no, I think we wanted to keep it quite true to whatever the story we had was. Because it was original in its own right.

Dark Phoenix actress Sophie Turner attended a special panel at New York Comic Con 2018 where she talked about her time on Game of Thrones and her upcoming X-Men movie.

Reporters in attendance asked her about sharing scenes with Michael Fassbender, her on-screen relationship with Scott Summers and everything in between. Here are the highlights from the Entertainment Weekly in the Studio @NYCC spotlight panel.

Did Famke Janssen reach out to you?

I emailed her when I got the role and said ‘I loved your work so much and you played Jean in such a heartbreaking and beautiful way and I wanted to emulate that and put my own spin on it. Is there any advice you can give, anything I should read or watch that you did?’ And she wrote back and said ‘I’m handing the baton to you, do with the role what you want this is a new thing for you.’ That was a big honor.

And then I met her at a party and ran up to her, hugged her and said “FAMKE!” She’s really sweet and supportive.

Did you do your research?

I probably watched the movies like 100 times. I was gifted one of the original Dark Phoenix comics from a friend so I read that. I did my research, but, one thing Simon wanted to really emphasize, especially with Dark Phoenix and all the other material in terms of the movies, this is a whole new kind of movie. Don’t rewatch the movies, this is a completely different take on Dark Phoenix because of the mood. A completely different take on an X-Men movie.

Did you know the next film would be Dark Phoenix when filming Apocalypse?

She “Phoenixed” out a bit in Apocalypse , but it was my first movie and I didn’t think the next one would be about Dark Phoenix. [I thought] maybe way down the line they’ll do it. It was only about six months before we started shooting Dark Phoenix that Simon sat me down and told me.
